BREAKING NEWS: BOSTON SWORD ATTACK LEAVES POLICE OFFICER INJURED, SUSPECT DEAD
BOSTON, MA – April 5, 2026 – A man was fatally shot by police officers on Saturday morning after he attacked multiple first responders with a sword inside an apartment building near Northeastern University, authorities confirmed.
The incident unfolded around 10:30 AM on the 200 block of Hemmenway Street, a busy area adjacent to the university campus. According to Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox, the situation began when the suspect placed a 911 call, claiming that four armed individuals were inside his apartment and attempting to harm him.
Responding officers arrived at the scene and located the man inside his apartment. They quickly determined that he was suffering from a severe mental health crisis. In an effort to de-escalate the situation, an EMS clinician and a mental health clinician were called to the scene.
For approximately 35 to 45 minutes, officers and clinicians attempted to negotiate with the man through the closed apartment door, urging him to come out peacefully. Suddenly, without warning, the man opened the door. He emerged wielding a sword and immediately launched a violent attack.
The suspect first struck a police officer, who was standing near the door, causing a deep laceration to the officer's hand. The officer was forced to retreat as the suspect continued his assault. The man then turned his attention to the EMS clinician, tackling him forcefully to the ground. Other officers and personnel at the scene were also subjected to the attack, resulting in several individuals suffering minor injuries.
In response to the immediate and lethal threat, officers first deployed a Taser in an attempt to subdue the suspect. When the Taser proved ineffective, at least one officer discharged their service pistol, striking the suspect. The man was rushed to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
The injured police officer, whose identity has not been released, was treated for serious wounds to his hand. A tourniquet was applied at the scene before he was transported. The EMS clinician and other injured personnel sustained varying degrees of minor injuries. All victims are reported to be in stable condition and are expected to recover.
The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office has launched a full investigation into the shooting, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting. Commissioner Cox stated that based on the preliminary investigation, the use of deadly force appears "right and justified" given the nature of the attack.
Authorities have also confirmed that this incident is not connected to a separate stabbing that occurred near the university campus last Wednesday. The identity of the deceased suspect has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
In a statement, Commissioner Cox expressed his sorrow over the event. "This is a deeply tragic incident for everyone involved," Cox said. "Our thoughts are with our injured officers and the EMS personnel. We are praying for their full and speedy recovery."
The investigation is ongoing.
